Assist the Registered Nurse in the, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

  • Participate in development of self and others.
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • At the direction of the Registered Nurse participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care.
  • Successfully completed the HCA Emergency Department competency workbook and show ability to teach others.
  • Support the registered nurse to provide family centred care to children attending the emergency department.
  • To maintain high standards of care and promote an environment suitable for the care of children, ensuring that all patients’ needs are met.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situation
  • To maintain mandatory training competencies aligned to your role.
  • Maintain confidentiality and data security.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns escalating promptly and appropriately to the registered nurses.
  • Act in a way to promote confidentiality, dignity and trust of patients, parents, carers and other staff members.

Job responsibilities

Communication

  • Report any concern regarding patient care
  • Participate in any patient and public involvement activities
  • Provide reassurance support to patients and carers/family
  • Provide Health Promotion Advice to patients and families as appropriate.
  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings and represent the department at Trust wide meetings when appropriate, disseminating information as appropriate.Responsibility for patient/client care
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in the evaluation of care and completion of patient documentation.
  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care.
  • Work collaboratively with others in the department to ensure that patients needs are met.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Undertake escort of patients as directed by a registered nurse.
  • Undertake extended skills/roles as designated by Emergency Department Manager Nurse/Practice Educator nurse.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse and medical team in the management of major trauma and the care seriously ill child, including cardiac arrest situations

1. Responsibility for policy/service development

  • Contribute to the development of services.
  • Maintain health, safety and security and report any concern.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others

Responsibility for financial and physical resources

  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Support the housekeeping team with duties when required.

Responsibility for information resources

  • Maintaining accurate record keeping, utilising information services i.e. Meditech and other systems.

Responsibility for research and development

  • To contribute and support departmental research.

Person Specification

Education and training

Essential

  • NVQ 2/3 in healthcare related study or evidence of equivalent knowledge and skills
  • Emergency department HCA competency handbook complete (or relevant evidence and experience of already working at band 3 in a paediatric HCA role.)

Experience of

Essential

  • Experience of working on a health care environment and child care
  • Working as part of a large multidisciplinary team is able to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues.

Knowledge of

Essential

  • How to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • How to present factual information and refer questions to others where appropriate

Skills

Essential

  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings when there may be barriers to understanding

Personal attributes

Essential

  • Good attendance record
  • Awareness and understanding of confidentiality
  • Basic understanding of NHS Issues
