About the Job: 

 

The purpose of this role is to provide care and support to acutely mentally unwell people of working age.

You will be working within an inpatient unit, are required to work in support of the qualified nurses and other health care professionals and carry out assigned tasks involving direct care in support of and supervised by registered nurses. occupational therapist.

You will be involved in the delivery and coordination of ward activities.

The Job involves listening and talking to patients, carers and colleagues as well as external stakeholders; observing patients behaviour providing close observation to ensure patient safety; encouraging patients with eating and drinking and personal hygiene; involving patients in diversional activities; escorting patients out of the unit; dealing with anger and aggression through explanation, negotiation and de-escalation; assisting in the management of violent episodes and encouraging patient to adhere to their care and treatment plans which include accepting medication.

You will work over a 24 hour rotational shift pattern

Main duties of the job

Recognising the patient as an individual and helping them to meet his or her social, emotional, health and intellectual needs. Develop relationships with patients, carers and colleagues which allow effective communication.Maintain open communication with patients, carers and staff. Record information on charts and records.Input data on patients electronic recordsTake, record and report telephone discussions and requestsRecognising the individuality of the patient and help to meet his or her social, emotional and intellectual needs.Will be involved in the delivery and coordination of ward activitiesEnsuring that basic physical needs are met.Assisting in planned treatments in accordance with the MDT approach.Encouraging and assisting patients to participate in group and individual therapeutic activitiesAssisting in the running of groups and activitiesAssist with management of challenging behaviour (verbal and physical aggression) under supervision from trained member of staff.Work as cokey worker and participate in reviewing and carrying out planned programmes of care.Assist in the administration of medication and treatments.Carry out observations in accordance with Trust Policy. Frequent requirement for concentration.Assisting in the monitoring of patients nutritional needs.Assist patients, where necessary, with all personal care needs and assist trained staff in assessing patients level of functioning.Escorting patients when directed.

Work with patients, Occupational Therapists and nursing staff to identify patient centred activities that the patient enjoys, finds occupationally meaningful and which occupy and divert the patient in a positive way improving the quality of lifeTo provide instruction (verbal and non-verbal) to patients on a range of activities as part of the activities programme, in a way that maintains their dignity and which demonstrates respectTo develop a rapport with patients, to encourage and motivate them to participate in activity (in either group work or individual work)To contribute to the development and implementation of a creative and innovative activities programme responsive to the varying needs of the patient group, and which the Occupational Therapist will endorseTo maintain and update an activity plan on the ward and therapeutic leave activities that take place away from the ward setting, and allocate time to organize activity over a 7 day period and for periods of absenceTo observe general behaviour, abilities and responses of patients and report them verbally to the multi-disciplinary team and within the electronic patient recordTo participate in clinical discussions and reviews as requiredTo regularly attend identified handovers within the Therapy team and Ward teamTo assist Occupational Therapist/nursing team with compiling risk assessmentsPatients suitability to attend therapeutic leave activities away from the ward settingRisk assessment of proposed venue or activity for suitability for the needs of our patient groupsTo co-assist qualified staff members in therapeutic group work with patientsHandle monies while out on trips with patients where necessary and provide receipts for all transactions as per Trust Policy for accounting and audit purposesAny other duties as required by the Occupational TherapistTo support patient protected mail times and promote meal times as a social and therapeutic eventAssist patients to meet their dietary requirements to promote recovery and wellbeingAssist patients with their personal hygiene needs to promote recovery and routine

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Good standard of general education
  • Adequate literacy skills
  • Experience of working with people, for example, in a health care setting as an HCA or rehabilitation assistant, particularly with mental health needs and dementia
  • Ability to write notes, record and retrieve information on paper and electronic patient records
  • Evidence of a good standard of Literacy/English Language skills
  • Good communication skills
  • High standards of verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills with the ability to use email and internet
  • Compassionate, exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers and relatives remaining sensitive and empathetic
  • Listens to others views respecting and valuing individual patient needs
  • Ability to remain flexible and respond to rapidly changing and/or fluctuating needs of the patients and wider ward
  • Professional and patient focused approach with inspirational skills
