Busy Student GP Practice. List size is 23,000 patients currently. We have a team of 8 GPs, 3 Nurses, 2 GPAs, 2 HCAs and 8 admin.

Job responsibilities
Job Purpose
To assist the Practice Nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, practice based healthcare. This includes the general organisation of the clinical area and associated clinical, administration and general duties, which ensure an efficient service to the patient and the practice at all times. Once the required skills and competencies are assessed the Practice Nurses will delegate specific tasks to the HCAs thereby extending the service offered to the patients and enhancing patient care. The HCAs are monitored by the Practice Nurses and Practice Manager in order to ensure best practice. The HCA will also assist in delivery of University wide Health Promotion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical
- To perform blood pressure measurements, urine tests (including pregnancy tests), phlebotomy and Electrocardiography; recording the obtained information accurately in the patient records, and reporting abnormal findings accordingly to the GP or Practice Nurse. Assist GP or nurse during minor operations, IUCD and contraceptive implant fittings or removals.
- Mental Health – To assist lead GP/Nurse on Mental Health patients, following up patient appointments, DNAs and QOF recalls.
- Assisting at minor op, IUCD and contraceptive implant procedures.
- To assist recalls for smears and over 40 health checks via QOFs, workflow and tasks.
- Responsible for stock cupboard/supplies for the Health Centre.
- To assist with recalls for Audit C patients, either via appt or telephone.
- Responsible for the annual calibration of equipment within the Health Centre to maintain equipment throughout the year.
- To chaperone patients as required.
- Obtain specimens as required and store them in the appropriate place for collection, document all relevant information as required.
- To perform other duties once trained and assessed to be competent in carrying them out
Infection Control
- Check and record fridge temperatures daily reporting any discrepancy to the Practice Nurse.
- Ensure that the clinical areas are clean and tidy at all times, to take responsibility for the ongoing hygiene of all consulting rooms including the cleaning of spilt body fluids in accordance with the Community Infection Control Policy.
Health Promotion
- Take an active part as HCA lead on Health Promotion and College liaison in the education of patients and other University students and staff.
- To maintain Health Promotion Board, ensuring that the information is up to date and themes changed in partnership with the Health Promotion Lead
Organisational
- Answer telephone queries and assist in the smooth running of the practice.
- Assist the Practice Nurse in the co-ordination of efficient and effective call / recall systems for Breast and Cervical Screening and blood tests.
- Attends multi-disciplinary practice meetings as requested giving information as required.
- To be responsible for appropriate documentation and record keeping in line with service standards and guidelines
- To use a range of IT equipment including SystmOne and to ensure that all data is record on to IT systems in an accurate and timely manner
Effort
- To deal sensitively with patients who have high levels of anxiety and aggression caused by pain, dementia or limited mobility.
- To perform duties with sensitivity to individual patient needs, e.g., taking account of cultural background, language requirements, disability etc.
- The job involves frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions on a regular (daily basis) e.g. bodily fluids including sputum, vomit, urine and occasional exposure to verbal and physical aggression.
