About the Job: 

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Part-time Health Care Assistant (36 hours per week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays) to work within our General Practice team and support with a range of clinical services.

Main duties of the job

The role of HCA is essential to primary care, working independently and alongside clinicians. We are looking for a candidate with experience of working in primary care, preferably within general practice to join a friendly and supportive team on a part-time basis at Stapenhill Medical Centre. This is a well-established GP surgery serving a diverse population in East Staffordshire.

We are a highly productive Practice always looking to provide excellent care and new services to our patients.

We currently have three full-time Partners, assisted by three salaried GP’s, a Clinical Pharmacist, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, two Practice Nurses, one Healthcare Assistant, two General Practice Assistants and one Care-Coordinator.

With a patient list currently in excess of 9,500 and growing, and with the development of new services, we are seeking to recruit to address our future needs.

We are a friendly well-established Practice with high QOF scores and a Good CQC rating.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a candidate preferably with training/experience in:

  • Phlebotomy
  • New patient health checks
  • NHS Health Checks
  • Annual health checks (e.g., for long-term condition review, Mental Health physical checks)
  • Basic observations (height, weight, blood pressure, temperature etc.)
  • Near patient testing (e.g. blood glucose/ketones)
  • ECGs
  • Injections within scope of practice (e.g., B12, Flu vaccines, Shingles)
  • Restocking, ordering and maintaining clinical equipment
  • Assisting with minor surgical procedures
  • Removal of wound closure materials, including sutures, clips and staples
  • To act as a chaperone for other clinicians
  • Urinalysis, preparation and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Management of clinical waste duties.
  • Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions, including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
  • Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being
  • Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.
  • Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
  • Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
  • Healthcare qualification (level 3) or working towards gaining equivalent level
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Venepuncture
  • New patient medicals, including height, weight, BP, pulse
  • Chaperone procedure
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong IT skills
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting
  • Clear, polite telephone manner
  • Effective time management (planning and organising)
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure

Desirable

  • Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate
  • Vaccination certification
  • Removal of sutures and staples
  • Competent in the use of Office and Outlook
  • Experience in use of System one
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Flexibility to work outside core office hours (extended access)
