Google has started embedding digital watermarks into images edited with generative AI in Google Photos. As of this week, photos altered using the Reimagine feature in Magic Editor on Pixel 9 devices will carry a unique digital watermark to enhance transparency.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Reimagine, introduced in 2024, allows users to modify photos using AI-powered tools, creating more dramatic edits that blur the line between real and AI-generated imagery. With AI-generated images becoming increasingly lifelike, digital watermarking has emerged as a key solution to help users identify altered content.
Google is utilizing SynthID, developed by its DeepMind division, to embed watermarks into AI-edited images without altering their appearance. SynthID also enables users to scan photos for potential watermarks and supports AI-generated text and video files. Additionally, users can access the “About this Image” section to check for embedded watermarks in an image’s metadata.
However, not all edits will trigger watermarking. Google notes that minor changes, such as altering the color of a small background object, maybe too subtle for SynthID detection.
This initiative aligns with Google’s AI transparency efforts, ensuring that AI-edited content in Google Photos remains identifiable. The company emphasizes its commitment to responsible AI use, following its published AI principles.
