Yale University Visiting African Scholars Fellowship 2026–2027

Yale University’s Council on African Studies is inviting applications for its Yale University Visiting African Scholars Fellowship for the 2026–2027 academic year. This program offers African scholars a rare chance to teach, conduct research, and become part of one of the world’s most respected academic communities.

Designed for early- to mid-career academics working at universities across Africa, the fellowship provides an enriching experience at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Centre for International and Area Studies.

What the Fellowship Offers

Selected scholars will:
• Teach one semester-long course focused on Africa in the humanities or social sciences.
• Work on an independent research project throughout the academic year.
• Give at least one public lecture at Yale.
• Engage fully in the academic activities, events, and programs of the Council on African Studies.

The fellowship includes a generous stipend, research funds, and full access to Yale’s world-class libraries and academic resources. Fellows must live in New Haven for the full duration of the fellowship, beginning 1 August 2026.

Who Can Apply

The opportunity is open to scholars who:
• Are currently employed at a university in Africa.
• Hold a PhD or possess equivalent academic experience.
• Have strong research backgrounds and proven teaching experience.
• Are prepared to teach a course and participate actively in Yale’s academic environment.

What You Need for the Application

Applications are submitted through Interfolio. Applicants must prepare the following:
• A cover letter with contact information and the name of a Yale faculty member whose work aligns with their interests, including reasons for the proposed collaboration.
• A complete CV with publications.
• A detailed research statement (up to 1,000 words).
• Names and contact information of two referees. (Reference letters will be requested only for finalists.)
• A course outline with weekly topics, readings, and assignments for the class the applicant plans to teach.
