About the Job: 

Job summary

To work effectively as a member of the ward team and to establish and maintain relationships within the team. To support qualified staff in the management and delivery of clinical practice. To promote equality of care and non-discriminatory practice, acknowledging a patient’s personal beliefs and identity. To ensure that information is passed to the appropriate member of the team. To support patients and relatives in adjusting to the changed circumstances caused by illness and injury.

Main duties of the job

  • Take accurate messages and answer the telephone in a courteous manner.
  • Work co-operatively with other members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ensure orientation of new patients to the ward environment
  • Following and implementing care plans under the direction of a qualified nurse.
  • Basic patient care – this could include feeding, washing, dressing, personal hygiene
  • Undertake the care of patients who are dying
  • Undertake patient moving and handling using a safe and correct procedure
  • Obtaining, testing and recording specimens from the patient
  • Responding appropriately to emergency situations

Job responsibilities

  1. Communication

Take accurate messages and answer the telephone in a courteous manner.

Ensure orientation of new patients to the ward environment

  1. Analytical and Planning

Following and implementing care plans under the direction of a qualified nurse.

  1. Clinical Duties (If Applicable)

Basic patient care – this could include feeding, washing, dressing, personal hygiene.

Undertake the care of patients who are dying.

Undertake patient moving and handling using a safe and correct procedure.

Obtaining, testing and recording specimens from the patient.

Responding appropriately to emergency situations

  1. Policy and Service Development

Contribute to the Individual Performance Review Process and personal development plan.

Ensure understanding of the ward/departments Risk Management Strategies.

Each Health Care Assistant should maintain patient confidentiality at all times and in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott principles. Specifically: To correctly establish the identity of individuals prior to divulging any information. On establishing identity, to provide appropriate and relevant information without breaching confidentiality.

  1. Financial and Physical Resources

Maintaining a clean environment with due consideration to Health and Safety issues.

  1. Staff Management

Each Health Care Assistant should work under the direction of a qualified member of staff at all times.

  1. Information Resources

Input details on the patient related computer systems.

  • GCSE in Maths and English (Passed)
